A New Aerosol Dry Deposition Model for Air Quality and Climate Modeling

Abstract Dry deposition of aerosols from the atmosphere is an important but poorly understood and inadequately modeled process in atmospheric systems for climate air quality. Comparisons currently used aerosol dry models to a compendia published field measurement studies various landscapes show very poor agreement over wide range particle sizes. In this study, we develop test new model that modification current Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model. The agrees much better with measured velocities across key innovation addition second inertial impaction term microscale obstacles such as leaf hairs, ridges, needleleaf edge effects. most significant effect increase mass accumulation mode CMAQ. Accumulation by almost order magnitude forested areas lesser increases shorter vegetation. Peak PM 2.5 concentrations are reduced some up 40% CMAQ simulations. Over continuous United States, average 16% July 2018 at System monitoring sites. For summer simulations, bias error significantly reduced, especially areas.
